Rice Oligonucleotide Array Project OpeningsBioinformatics EngineerProject Description TIGR is engaged in a number of plant genomics projects that involve both structural and functional genomics including sequencing, annotation, and expression profiling. Position Description The Bioinformatics Engineer is responsible for creating software for the display and manipulation of biological data, maintaining close familiarity with in-house software for management of biological data, adding new software (either internally developed or imported from outside TIGR) to in-house genome annotation systems, drawing upon knowledge of biology to improve biological data mining and management techniques, maintaining close familiarity with in-house databases for genome analysis, processing large genomic datasets, and performing general annotation duties. Qualifications Bachelor's degree or Master's degree in the biological sciences or computer science, with at least one year experience in bioinformatics software development. Solid knowledge of Perl, SQL, HTML, CGI, relational databases, and Unix shell scripting. Programming skills should include C/C++ and/or Java. Good analytical, interpersonal, and communication skills. Ability to work in a team environment and meet schedules. Excellent organization and time management skills. Flexibility to handle a variety of tasks and shift priorities simultaneously. Strong interpersonal skills; ability to effectively interact with all levels of staff and external contacts; ability to work as an effective team member. Cooperative and service-oriented attitude; must be able to work under pressure and maintain a professional demeanor. Ability to use sound judgment to effectively solve problems within the scope of the position. High level of initiative and ability to work with minimum supervision. Superior verbal and written communications skills. The Bioinformatics Engineer is responsible for a wide range of technical tasks involving the creation and use of software for the display and manipulation of biological data.
